Electrification of Bus Fleets Webinar Series
Zemo Partnership hosted a series of webinars looking at the electrification of bus fleets in the UK. The webinars shared the experience of operators and local authorities who have worked with suppliers to overcome challenges presented by electrification.
Topics discussed included:
- Route planning with EV
- Grid connection processes and challenges
- Vehicle specifications, ancillary loads and energy efficiency
- Practical challenges of depot electrification
- Driver and passenger experiences
N.B. Due to coronavirus related lockdown restrictions, we were unable to host meetings and visit depots physically, but the webinars provide an interim solution to support knowledge and experience transfer in the short term.

Low Emission Bus Guide
Background
Information provision is key to the uptake of new zero emission bus (ZEB) technologies and low carbon fuels. How to understand the challenges arising from changes in the industry’s operational models can be helpfully addressed by sharing best practice, particularly in areas such as total cost of ownership (TCO) and charging/refuelling regimes.
The Secretariat will build on two years of successful regional workshops by running further events focused on ZEBs and charging infrastructure. Local authority representatives and bus operators already using ZEB technologies will present insights at the workshops, highlighting the main challenges, solutions and the environmental and financial benefits.
Technologies to be covered will include plug-in hybrids, battery electric and hydrogen buses as well as pantograph, AC and DC charging techniques and low carbon hydrogen production and refuelling infrastructure. This project will link with Zemo Partnership’s 'Electrification of Fleets' projects.
Objectives
- To share best practice and understand challenges and solutions in terms of introducing ZEB technologies and infrastructure
- To host three regional Zero Emission Bus Workshops across the UK in partnership with local authorities
- To produce a post-event report summarising key findings and discussions after each workshop
- To promote the ULEB/LEB Guide to inform smaller bus operators and local authorities about ZEB technologies, grant support and case studies.
