A new report by WWF aims to identify and inspire the changes needed to transorm personal mobility. The report is based on a series of meetings with 30 European organisations from government, business and the community with an interest in all aspects of personal mobility.
The report highlights actions that can be put into practice immediately and considers the long-term social changes that are required. It identifies some of the main barriers to progress:
- prices that do not reflect true environmental and social costs;
- a focus on political quick-fixes rather than investment in long-term solutions;
- insufficient incentives for consumers to choose low-carbon options.
The report identifies a number of approaches for overcoming these barriers.
Meanwhile, the European Environment Agency has published its annual ‘Energy and Environment’ Report which assesses the key drivers, environmental pressures and impacts from the production and consumption of energy.
This year’s report indicates that 80% of the greenhouse gas emissions in Europe still come from the energy sector. The report confirms that if Europeans stick by current policies and measures, energy consumption will continue to rise by up to 26% by 2030 – and fossil fuels will remain the main source of supply.
