What Car? the leading car buyer guide is to announce its first ever awards based on environmental criteria at the London Motor Show on 22 July. What Car? says the initiative has been prompted by "overwhelming requests from readers for information on green cars".

The event announcing the winners will be held in an auditorium in the Motor Show's Greener Driving Pavilion. The awards will comprise 10 categories and an overall Green Car of the Year.

What Car? joined a group, including the LowCVP and the Department for Transport, which collaborated in the establishment of the Co-operative Insurance Greener Driving Pavilion. (See associated link.)

Steve Fowler, What Car? Group Editor, said: 'With increasing environmental concerns among car buyers, not to mention green taxes and spiralling fuel costs, the time is right for a recognised Green Awards".
