US lawmakers have revealed legislative plans for introducing tax credit incentives for the use of natural gas vehicles. The new bill, which was sponsored by Democratic Senator Robert Menendez, will extend tax credits for 10 years on buying vehicles that run on natural gas as well as installing natural gas refuelling stations.

Under the NAT GAS (New Alternative Transportation to Give Americans Solutions) Bill, the purchase tax credit cap for a light-duty natural gas vehicle would be increased to $12,500, up from the current $5,000. There would also be a range of other incentives. (See associated links)

The bill would also authorise US$30 million per year from fiscal year 201o to 2014 for natural gas vehicle research and development.
