A colour-coded fuel economy label for used cars is to be launched in the autumn. The used car label is based on the successful new car label now on display in over 90% of showrooms. The scheme - brokered by the LowCVP with support from both government and industry - will help consumers consider the environmental performance of cars they are looking to buy at dealers, particularly their road tax band and fuel consumption.

The used car fuel economy label applies to cars up to two years old though data will be available back to 2001 for dealers who choose to label older cars.

The label is a government-backed scheme for used car dealers, developed by the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership with support from the RMIF, SMMT, the Vehicle Certification Agency and the Department for Transport. DfT is funding the development of VCA’s used label database and subsequent ongoing development and maintenance costs of the used car fuel economy label project for the first 18 months from the consumer launch, so costs to dealers will be limited to printing and displaying the labels.

Dealers can sign-up and start downloading and displaying labels from Monday 3rd August, allowing three months for them to become familiar with the scheme prior to a consumer launch event intended for late October or early November.

Dealers and others interested in the scheme should visit the Vehicle Certification Agency's website at . This also provides a range of frequently asked questions.
