The UK remained the biggest market in Europe for zero emission buses in 2024, according to figures recently published by SMMT. 1,570 electric or hydrogen buses entered service last year, a 35.5% increase compared with 2023, driven partly by increased model availability.

Zero emission options made headway across all three segments analysed: minibuses, double-deck and single-deck models. ZEVs comprised 43.9% of registrations of new single and double decker buses.

Britain’s bus fleet is particularly advanced in its transition, driven in early years by a succession of ‘Green Bus Funds’ based on standards defined by Zemo Partnership (then LowCVP).  Progress has been further accelerated by the rollout of the Zero Emission Bus Regional Area (ZEBRA) scheme across regions. With the second phase of ZEBRA funding now awarded and orders placed,  additional zero emission bus deliveries are expected this year.

Overall the UK bus, coach and minibus market had its strongest year for sixteen years. A 70.1% increase in registrations saw 8,390 buses join Britain’s roads.
