The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders' (SMMT) 8th annual Sustainability Report highlights areas in which the UK Motor Industry has made long-term progress in its environmental performance over a number of years. The 2007 report points to progress since 2002 in average new car CO2 emissions as well as in the amounts of pollution and waste resulting from the production process. The industry awards itself a 'green' rating for having reduced average new car CO2 emissions from 174.2g/km in 2002 to 167.2g/km in 2006 and confirms a 2.2% fall in average emissions of new cars sold in the UK between 2005 and 2006.
The SMMT report says that cuts in average new car emissions have saved an estimated one million tonnes of CO2 each year.
