The Department for Transport will share joint responsibility with Defra and the DTI for the Government's target of a 20% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2010. The announcement was made by the Chancellor in the Comprehensive Spending Review, which defines public spending plans for the period 2005-8.
The change is in recognition of "the contribution of the transport sector to greenhouse gas emissions." The change will help ensure that climate change considerations are incorporated into policy decisions influencing all sectors of transport - particularly aviation, for which there are no current carbon reduction targets.
