The Secretary of State for Transport, Alistair Darling, has written to the European Commission expressing the UK's interest in the potential expansion of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) to the surface transport sector.
In a parliamentary statement, the Transport Secretary said that the letter asked that the inclusion of emissions from the surface transport sector be considered as part of the current review of the EU ETS and offered the UK Government's active contribution to work in this area.
