The Transport Secretary says that a transformation is needed in the way we move ourselves and our goods around if we are to meet the goal of tackling climate change. Speaking at the LowCVP's fifth annual conference, held alongside the Motor Show, Ruth Kelly said that she believes that the vision of a low carbon transport future has come a lot closer in the last year.
The Transport Secretary said that the LowCVP has already established itself as "a leading player in the development of low carbon vehicles". Referring to the LowCVP's fifth anniversary this year, Ms Kelly added: "Like all five year olds, LowCVP remains full of energy and has the best years ahead of it. I think this has become more and more apparent over the last few months."
Ruth Kelly said that we need a "revolution in the way we live and do business" and that this "has been given a new impetus by the soaring cost of oil". She said: "The era of cheap oil is over... we need to start finding alternatives now as well as ways to ensure we use the oil we have more efficiently".
The Transport Secretary gave the keynote speech at the LowCVP conference which was attended by over 150 delegates.
Kulveer Ranger, the GLA's new Director of Transport Policy, outlined Mayor Boris Johnson's strategy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. He provided more details about the Mayor's plans to boost electric vehicles and recharging facilities in London (see separate news story).
During the second session of the conference, delegates heard from three professors - Jim Skea, Julia King and Ed Gallagher - who spoke from their different perspectives on prospective policy solutions to cut carbon from road transport.
Their presentations and those of the other speakers at the Conference are downloadable via the associated link.
