Alistair Darling has announced that the the introduction of road user charging will be supported by a Transport Innovation Fund to help fund local and regional pilot schemes. The Transport Secretary said that the Fund will initially be worth £200m in 2008, rising to £2.5bn by 2014.
Under the proposals, one or more local authorities or Passenger Transport Executives with congestion problems would be invited to develop pilot schemes.
The DfT will work in conjunction with the Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly, should those countries' local authorities decide to introduce road-charging pilots.
