Toyota has announced that it is to enter the EV charger market and that it is developing a charging station that is the first to make use of solar power. Each station will consist of charging equipment, solar cells and storage batteries so that the electricty generated by the solar cells is first stored in storage batteries and then used to charge electric vehicles.
The charging stations, which will be anchored on telephone poles, will generate 100 to 200 volts of electricity, storing their energy in batteries until needed. The charging stations are reported to be able to communicate their status to a central computer, and authenticate users' credentials, potentially enabling a model where customers pay for membership to the recharging network. Nissan is also reported to be moving to install a network of charger units to support the full electric Leaf model which it is due to launch next year.
