Tougher CO2 regulations are encouraging automotive parts suppliers to develop technologies that will make cars more fuel efficient and cut CO2 emissions according to industry experts. Car makers may benefit from strengthening their ties with the supplier industry to ensure they retain competitive advantage which is arising from the developments, they say.

Reported by Automotive News Europe, Eric Heymann, senior economist of Deutsche Bank research, said: "Suppliers will contribute their expertise to the development of more efficient powertrain concepts, lighter materials or other technologies to improve vehicle efficiency."

According to Shigehiro Nishimura, president of Denso Europe, which provides supply components for hybrid vehicles such as the Toyota Prius: "Carmakers and suppliers are finding they have to work closely together in order to integrate new technology to achieve optimum efficiency. Ultimately, this will probably be good for suppliers who can produce fuel-saving technology as they will be able to charge more and improve their profitability."
