Ford is adding a third wind turbine to its Dagenham plant which, the company says, will mean that its Dagenham Diesel Centre remains 100 percent powered by wind- generated electricity following a recent expansion of the plant. Ford's development follows a similar initiative by Nissan in Sunderland.
The third turbine provided by London-based green energy company Ecotricity has the capacity to produce 1.8 megawatts of green electricity, the equivalent of the power needed for 1,000 homes, the company says.
Renewable power supplies about three per cent of Ford's energy needs worldwide, through the use of hydro, solar, wind and geothermal power, landfill gas and waste gases.
At the end of last year Nissan installed two wind turbines at its Sunderland plant meaning that a total of eight turbines will be able to produce six percent of the electricity the plant needs. Nissan has also installed solar panels in its Barcelona plant in Spain.
