The Technology Strategy Board has announced a £10m competition to encourage research into technology which could make the introduction of electric cars more affordable. The funding is intended for business led collaborative research and development of all-electric and hybrid vehicles suitable for mass market applications.
The initiative is a part of the Low Carbon Vehicles Innovation Platform. It is intended to fund "highly innovative collaborative research projects in the field of ultra-efficient electrical systems for electric and hybrid vehicles". Funding is available for the development of ultra-efficient motive systems and vehicle ancillary systems with the aim of delivering more efficient, cost effective electric and hybrid road based vehicles. Applications will be invited from 19th January 2009 with a deadline for expressions of interest of 26th February 2009 - project decisions will be expected in May 2009.
