Technology alone will not produce the progress necessary to combat climate change and meet German climate protection targets according to the report of a high profile event hosted by the Wuppertal Institute, the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA) and Dresden University. The group concluded that there must be political support for a modal shift to “greener” forms of transport in order to sufficiently cut greehouse gas emissions from transport.
Stakeholders at the workshop agreed that a successful shift would only be possible following significant and extensive improvements to freight transport, urban public transport, and aviation.
UBA Vice President Dr. Thomas Holzmann said “Due to its strong growth the transport sector has not yet done its bit to cut CO2. Yet without emissions reductions in this sector, Germany can not achieve its climate protection goals. A shift of traffic and transport to more ecological modes must be actively promoted”.
