Swiss researchers say Li-ion batteries for electric cars are 'greener' than expected

A team of Swiss researchers from the EMPA Institute says that li-ion batteries now increasingly used in electric vehicles have a lower environmental impact than previously thought. The researchers calculated the ecological footprints of electric cars fitted with li-ion batteries, taking into account many factors from production through its operation to its disposal, and then compared that information with that of gasoline cars.

The Swiss study found that a conventional car with a petrol engine must consume less than 4 liters of fuel per 100km - or do about 70 mpg (miles per gallon)  - in order to be as environmentally friendly as a modern electric car.
