75% of car buyers plan to look for a vehicle with low CO2 emissions when making their next purchase according to a survey by the Newspaper Marketing Agency (NMA) which polled the views of 2,665 people. Over 80% also said that fuel economy is more important to them than high performance.Two-thirds of those surveyed said that they would change their choice of car to reduce their emissions, while 51% were prepared to pay more or low-emission technology. The only issue that mattered more than environmental impact when choosing a car was fuel efficiency.

The survey found that Honda and Toyota were the companies with the highest reputation for "doing something" to reduce the impact of cars on the environment. Lexus and Ford were their closest rivals but some way behind.

Many of those surveyed, however, admitted to being confused by the jargon associated with greener motoring. Only a quarter of respondents had any idea what their carbon footprint was while around 20% did not understand the term "greenhouse gases", with similar numbers confused by the terms "fuel efficient" and "CO2 emissions".
