Spain to reduce speed limits to save energy

Spain plans to reduce speed limits on dual carriageways near cities to 50mph as part of a package of measures designed to save energy, cut carbon emissions and reduce the country’s high fuel import bill.

The Spanish Government has also announced plans - which have been approved by the ministerial cabinet - to promote and extend public transport and invest in electric vehicles as part of a 31-point, three year, plan to save energy.

Spain's industry minister Miguel Sebastián said that a 20 per cent cut in speed limits on urban ring road systems, main thoroughfares and city access roads is one way to encourage more energy efficient driving.

Spain's Socialist Government is likely to be opposed over the measures by the opposition Popular party which attacked the measures as “gesture politics”.
