Under its presidency of the European Union, Spain is expected to push for the adoption of a coordinated European plan to develop electric cars. The strategy is reported to be supported by Germany, France and the European Commission.

According to ENDS, the plan is likely to be pushed forward at a meeting of competitiveness ministers in May.

The Spanish industry minister Miguel Sebastián presented a presidency proposal for a strategy on electric cars at an informal meeting of competitiveness ministers in the Spanish city of San Sebastián.

A document being prepared for the meeting urges consensus on the need for EU action to "ensure the consistency and transparency" of the initiatives being carried out by a number of member states. It also calls for non-fiscal measures to stimulate demand and for EU funding to be more coordinated to provide a common direction for research funding.
