Source London, the electric vehicle charge point network in the UK capital has delivered its target of 1,300 charge points over the last 2 years. Transport for London now believes the network is in a position for it to be privatised.
Launched in 2011, Source London is currently operated by Siemens under a multi-million pound sponsorship deal due to end in March 2014. At that point, TfL hopes to transfer the scheme to another operator.
John Mason, TfL director for Source London, said in a statement: "Having 'pump-primed' the market, we are now seeking a private sector operator who can continue to develop the market, and work to ensure a long term future for a sustainable charging network that is compatible with other schemes across the country."
TfL has published a notice to appear in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) seeking expressions of interest from potential bidders in order to take over the management and operation of the scheme.
1,300 charging points have been installed by a consortium of over 60 public and private partners, led by TfL, at over 300 sites in the capital including supermarkets, shopping centres, council and private car parks, hospitals and on the street, making it Europe’s largest urban charging network.
The Green Party is critical of the proposed privatisation, accusing the Mayor of watering down his pledge to make London the 'electric vehicle capital of Europe'. The Party's London Assembly member Darren Johnson said: "It seems the mayor is backtracking on his grand plans to make London the electric car capital of Europe and is quietly side lining this project by hiving it off to the private sector."
