As 2024 draws to a close, the Zemo Team would like to wish all members a happy, safe, and peaceful festive season and new year.

2024 was a big year for decarbonisation. A new Government came with a renewed commitment to net zero policy and with stated aims to make the UK a ‘clean energy superpower’ and the ‘green finance capital of the world’.

2030 is again the target date to achieve the phase-out of non-hybridised petrol and diesel cars as well as for the UK to achieve a zero carbon electricity system (under the 'Green Prosperity Plan').

Great British Energy has been set up with the stated aim of transforming the UK economy through investment in green infrastructure and technology whilst enhancing energy security, reducing household bills, and creating many 'green' jobs.

While 2024 has offered promise in terms of decarbonisation, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We still need many more policy details and a vision that we can coalesce around and work towards. That’s why, this month, Zemo published the Delivery Roadmap for Net Zero Transport to provide guidance to the new Government on what needs to be done to decarbonise road transport at the necessary pace.

In June Zemo announced the formation of the independent Council for Net Zero Transport, chaired by Lord Deben, which provides strategic oversight to the Partnership and its members to help steer the direction of the Roadmap.

To mark the launch of the Roadmap, Zemo hosted a series of member activities, including online and launch events at One Birdcage Walk and the House of Lords. Industry and political leaders and a wide range of key policy stakeholders gathered for panel debates and roundtable discussions.

Zemo's Summit in October brought together almost 200 delegates who heard from senior policy makers from the UK, Scottish, and Welsh Governments, sub-national and local government leaders. We were also joined by Professor Sir Jim Skea (the Partnership's launch director and now Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) who delivered a keynote speech on the latest climate science, emphasising the urgency of the decarbonisation challenge ahead.

Zemo's Renewable Fuels Assurance Scheme has gone from strength-to-strength, becoming international and now boasting 46 approved suppliers across the UK, Republic of Ireland, and Spain. Zemo also proudly announced the establishment of the Sustainable Racing Fuels Assurance Scheme in partnership with the FIA, the world governing body for motor sport. The scheme will provide robust assurance of the deployment of sustainable, low carbon fuels in motor sport, of which the first application will be in the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship.

Zemo published a series of reports and studies on a wide range of topics. We'd like to thank all our members who were involved in contributing to this research. This year's studies included: Vehicle life cycle GHG emissions studyDelivering Net Zero in a Changing World;Best Practice Guide: Consumer Information for Used EVsA Guide to Alternative Fuels for NRMMDelivering Net Zero Transport in the UK: Briefing for the new GovernmentRefrigerated Van and HGV Auxiliary Engines ReportDelivery Roadmap for Net Zero Transport in the UK.

This year was also a big one for the team. We bade farewell to old friends who have moved onto new pastures and welcomed some new faces as our secretariat team grew: Samira Ali joined us as Company & Membership Administrator; Karen Potter as Head of Membership; Neil Stockley as Head of Public Affairs;  Firdose Khan as Project Officer Intern; and Lois Loxley as Communications Executive. Of course, our new Managing Director, Claire Haigh, joined in January. They all look forward to working more with members in 2025.

Certainly a busy year for the Zemo Team! We’d like to thank all our members for your continued support, and we can't wait to see you all in 2025!
