The Government of Scotland has announced a series of measures aimed at promoting the use of lower carbon vehicles in the country's local councils and public sector bodies. The First Minister, Alex Salmond, announced the £4.3 million scheme at a Holyrood conference on Scotland's climate change abatement targets, "Delivering on 2020". The scheme will provide funding to meet the difference in cost between an electric car or van and its petrol or diesel equivalent.
First Minister Alex Salmond said: "The low carbon vehicle scheme will enable local authorities and other public agencies to invest in eco-friendly vans and cars this year and help drive down air-polluting emissions. The green bus scheme will also provide a fresh incentive to operators to purchase eco-friendly vehicles for their fleet."
Funds will be allocated to public bodies via local Community Planning Partnerships. The scheme is expected to become operational by the autumn.
