The 16-year-old Swedish climate change activist who founded the 'Schools Strike' movement, Greta Thunberg, has arrived for a climate conference after a 15-day, 3,000 mile voyage across the Atlantic on a zero emissions yacht, powered by wind and solar power.
Thunberg travelled from Plymouth on the Malizia II, a high-speed, 60ft (18m) racing yacht with underwater turbines which produces no carbon emissions.
She has been documenting her journey on social media, with videos showing rough conditions near the end of the voyage.
United Nations officials were in New York to greet Thunberg and her crew with 17 boats, each representing one of the organisation’s sustainable development goals.
At a press conference in New York (reported by the BBC), Thunberg addressed her recent comment that meeting Donald Trump would be a “waste”, explaining that he should “listen to the science”. She added: “If no one has been able to convince him about the urgency of the climate crisis, why would I be able to do that?”
