An EU project to develop environmentally friendly ‘vehicle platoons’ in which car drivers on motorways take their hands off the wheel has undergone its first successful trials. The research consortium thinks the technology may be able to cut fuel consumption by 20%.
The project is headed by UK-based engineering consultancy Ricardo. The Safe Road Trains for the Environment (SARTRE) project also sees potential for the technology to reduce accidents and safely fit more cars onto Europe’s increasingly congested motorways.
