Professor Julia King has been appointed to the Committee on Climate Change. The Committee has been established under the Climate Change Bill, currently before Parliament, to provide independent, expert advice on how the UK can best meet its Climate Change goals.

Professor King recently conducted a review for the UK government about the possibilities for lower carbon vehicles (see associated link).

Announcing the appointment, Environment Secretary Hilary Benn said: "The Committee on Climate Change will play a fundamental role in steering the UK's path towards a low carbon economy. I am delighted to appoint Julia King as the sixth member of the Committee. Her knowledge and experience in transport and particularly in reducing emissions from it will make an invaluable contribution to the Committee's work."

Lord Adair Turner is the Committee's Chair [Designate]. Other members already appointed include: scientists Sir Brian Hoskins and Lord Robert May, technologist Professor Jim Skea and economists Dr Sam Fankhauser and Professor Michael Grubb.

The Committee is due to provide its advice to Government on its review of the UK's 2050 target and the level of the first three carbon budgets by December 2008.
