London is to see the return of a national motor show which aims to rank alongside the events held in Geneva and Frankfurt. Launched by HRH Prince Michael of Kent, the show will take place in Battersea Park from 5-8 May 2016 and will have a big emphasis on electric and hybrid vehicles.
London has not hosted a motor show since 2008, when it ran at London's Excel centre. Unlike the earlier series, reports suggest that the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders will have no direct involvement in the new initiative.
Speaking at the Guild of Motoring Writers' annual dinner, Prince Michael said the show would compliment shows like the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Motorexpo at Canary Wharf rather than rival them. In addition to its low carbon/environmental theme, the show also plans to focus on road safety and education.
The British motor show's next running was planned for 2010 but was cancelled during the financial crisis after several major manufacturers withdrew their support for the event.
Autocar reports that the SMMT still owns the British motor show name and Prince Michael's new show will not be able to use that title.
