UK-based bus manufacturer Optare Plc has introduced and demonstrated the Solo EV, a full battery-powered electric bus. The bus uses the latest lithium ion phosphate batteries from Valence and the firm says the sealed batteries are inherently safe.
The Solo EV system includes continuous battery condition monitoring and an on-board automatic and water-cooled three-phase charger. The electric bus was launched on 24 March at a demonstration which took place at the Millbrook Proving Ground.
Meanwhile, Italian manufacturer Iveco delivered a Eurocargo diesel-electric parallel hybrid truck to Coca-Cola Enterprises at the recent European Business Summit in Brussels. The firm says it is the first such truck of this type to work in a European urban environment. The two firms worked on this pilot project to test the feasibility of hybrid truck technology and Coca-Cola will use the truck on delivery work in Brussels until the end of July. Iveco says the truck should offer fuel consumption and CO2 emission savings of 30%.
