Both the opposition Conservative and Liberal Democrat Parties have called for increases in the proportion of 'green' taxation, moving the tax burden away from income and capital and towards environmentally damaging behaviour.
The Conservative's Shadow Chancellor, George Osborne, said that the proportion of total taxation from environmentally-based levies had fallen from 7.7 per cent in 1997 to 6.2 per cent this year.
For the Liberal Democrats, Vince Cable, called for an increase in the proportion of 'green' taxation as part of a detailed tax plan involving overall tax cuts.
The LibDem plan calls for more sharply graduated vehicle excise duties and the linking of fuel duty more closely to inflation.
