NGO reports push for the end of petrol and diesel engine sales by 2030

Two reports released by WWF, in partnership with Vivid Economics, and Green Alliance propose the 2040 target to end petrol and diesel engine sales, set under the government's Clean Growth Strategy released last year, be brought forward to 2030 to tackle emissions and improve automotive business.
The wildlife conservation charity claims a 2030 target date would deliver a £3bn boost to the economy by making the UK a global hub for electric vehicle investment, add an extra 14,000 jobs to the UK's auto industry and cover over half of the emissions gap to meeting the Fifth Carbon Budget set by the COP21 Paris Climate Agreement.
The Green Alliance thinktank's report also states that a more rapid EV adoption will cut vehicle costs more quickly and reduce UK oil imports by almost 50 per cent by 2035.
The reports highlight several countries that are shifting away from combustion engines much faster than the UK’s current plans, and therefore urge the government to “lead the electric vehicle revolution” by bringing forward the ban.
