A new study undertaken by the University of California Berkeley’s Transportation Sustainability Research Center (TSRC) has concluded that the car sharing model car2go can reduce the overall number of vehicles on the road as well as substantively impacting travel behaviour, miles driven and drive down GHG emissions in urban areas.

The research group Innovative Mobility Research, based at TSRC, looked specifically at one-way car sharing in North America, with a focus on car2go as the scheme has the largest reach and is present in a number of major urban markets.

The study centred on car sharing members in Calgary, San Diego, Seattle, Vancouver and Washington, and received self-reported data derived from polling car2go users, together with vehicle activity data provided by the scheme. This revealed both vehicle ownership and emissions from driving fell due to the presence of the car sharing scheme. Reduced emissions were a result of an overall reduction in driving whilst respondents also reported walking more.
