Public authorities in Europe will be required to consider the environmental impacts of the vehicles they buy when a new EU directive comes into force in mid-June.
The Directive on Clean Vehicle Procurement has been published in the the EU's official journal on Friday, according to ENDS. Member states have until December 2010 to incorporate the Directive into national law. The rules state that public purchasers or contractors are required to take into account the lifetime costs of carbon dioxide emissions and air pollutants such as particulate matter. Data for calculating lifetime emissions costs are specified in an annex to the directive. (See associated link)
