CO2 emissions from all new cars sold in the first quarter of 2009 were 4.5% lower than in the same period of 2008 according to Clean Green Cars, a web publication aiming to provide environmental information to car buyers.

The motor manufactuers trade body, the SMMT, recently reported that CO2 emissions from new cars sold in the UK fell by 4.2% in 2008 compared with the previous year. If the Clean Green Cars data is confirmed, the rate of progress in CO2 emissions reductions has been, at least, maintained in 2009.

The Clean Green Cars website (see link) publishes tables which show the CO2 output for all manufacturers and models for the first quarter of 2009. The sports car segments showed the biggest percentage falls in emissions, but the biggest contributor to the overall emissions fall is the mini segment in which average emissions fell by over 7.6%. This is in large part due to the release of the new model Fiesta. The supermini and lower medium segments both cut emissions by over 3.5%.

Jay Nagley, Publisher of Clean Green Cars (reported by MSN) said: "New car carbon dioxide emissions are falling at an unprecedented rate. Until last year, CO2 output had been falling at less than 2% per year."

The Clean Green Cars' tables show the CO2 emissions performance by manufacturer and model, as well as by market segment.
