A new factory manufacturing advanced lithium-ion batteries for cars, may herald a surge in electric vehicle production. The new plant in France, run by Johnson Controls in a joint venture with Saft Advanced Power Solutions, will manufacture batteries for hybrid, plug-in hybrid, fuel cell and electric vehicles. The plant is already reported to have plans to produce battery packs for the upcoming Mercedes-Benz S Class 400 mild hybrid, due for production in 2009. Johnson Controls-Saft is also supplying lithium-ion batteries to systems and technical services company SAIC for use in its demonstration fleet of new energy vehicles. The Li-ion battery systems will be produced in the United States, and will be in the SAIC vehicles early in 2008. Johnson Controls-Saft has invested €15 million in the facility with an initial capacity of 5,000 battery packs per year and with the capacity to scale up as demand dictates.
