The European Parliament’s Environment Committee has proposed the bringing forward of plans to ensure compulsory clean and efficient procurement of public transport fleets and utility vehicles in Europe.
The Committee agreed to amend a draft EU law on clean vehicle procurement which was initially proposed to be legally binding from 2012, with an option for earlier implementation left open. MEPs voted that it should be applicable across the EU from 2010.
Annual public vehicle procurement in the EU is approximately 110,000 passenger cars, 110,000 light commercial vehicles, 35,000 lorries and 17,000 buses. The new proposal is aimed at inducing a demand for "greener" vehicles significant enough to stimulate greater development and investment in environmentally-friendly vehicles. Total procurement of vehicles by public bodies accounts for some 16% of the EU's GDP.
