Ken Livingstone, the London Mayor, may not go ahead with earlier proposals to exempt low carbon cars from the London congestion charge according to a report in The Times newspaper.
The Mayor had suggested (see LowCVP story link) that there would be free entry to the charging zone for low carbon (VED bands A and B) cars, with emissions of 120g/km or less. Concern is reported to have been increasing that the objective of cutting congestion might be compromised due to the growing popularity of smaller, low emission cars for city use. Average traffic speeds have recently fallen to below pre-congestion charge levels. It is suggested that Transport for London still intends to introduce a £25 charge for high emission cars while retaining the £8 charge for most vehicles.
