Marks and Spencer, the food retailer, has announced details of a new environmental policy through which the company aims to become 'carbon neutral' and which will result in major changes in the way that the company operates. The M&S announcement was closely followed by a far-reaching announcement from Tesco about its environmental policies.

Under the 100-point plan, which M&S says will cost £200m, the company will adopt ethical supply practices, increase renewable energy use, reduce waste and otherwise promote sustainability.

In terms of transport, M&S says it will run at least 50% of its lorries on biodiesel. The company will generally seek to reduce the 'food miles' in products it sells.

M&S's voluntary programme is one of the UK's biggest ever corporate social responsibility commitments. The plan was warmly welcomed by environmental groups.

Market leader Tesco has also recently announced a range of plans to cut carbon emissions and encourage its customers to 'buy green' (see story link below).
