Madrid is begining a programme to install electric vehicle recharging points at all public parking facilities in the city. The plan means that in the city's 36 parking installations there will be up to 58 recharging points where EVs can be charged for free. Meanwhile, in the UK, the new transport minister Sadiq Khan gave MPs more details about the cost of installing free standing street electric charging points.
Madrid's City Hall has also announced that all new parking lots will include charging stations and that the system will also be brought to municipal facilities used by residents. City Hall is expected to sign an agreement with the Spanish Ministry of Industry to further promote the use of electric cars shortly.
Responding to Theresa Villiers' written Parliamentary Question, Sadiq Khan said that there is a range of possible costs for free standing on-street charging points and that these may cost between £500 and £3,500, with accompanying street works where required costing up to £5,000. The total cost of installing a plug point on a wall where a power supply exists may be in the region of £250 to £1,000.
He added that more innovative fast charging or battery swap infrastructure would be more expensive to deliver.
Mr Khan noted that many motorists are likely to choose to recharge their electric and plug in hybrid vehicles at home overnight, provided they have secure access to a standard 13 amp socket and that this would involve no installation costs.
