Lower climate aim for aviation could mean higher target for other sectors

The Climate Change Committee (CCC) has told the Government that aviation emissions in rich countries should be capped at 2005 levels by 2050. In the UK, this would mean that emissions in other sectors would have to fall by 90% to meet the country's 80% reduction target for 2050, the objective now enshrined in the Climate Change Act.

The Climate Change Committee also called for a mid-term target in its recommendations which were made in a letter to UK transport minister Lord Adonis and climate change minister Ed Miliband. The government had asked the Committee for advice on tackling aviation emissions in advance of the UN climate conference in Copenhagen in December.

According to an EU source, quoted by ENDS, an emission reduction target for aviation and shipping is likely to be set in Copenhagen
