Earlier this month the LowCVP's Managing Director Andy Eastlake participated in the 12th edition of Michelin’s Challenge Bibendum, which was held in Chengdu in central China. Created over 15 years ago, Challenge Bibendum’s aim is to build international commitment to sustainable mobility.
Challenge Bibendum brings together political, industry, scientific, and media representatives to discuss how to speed-up the transition to sustainable mobility.
In the words of Michelin’s Senior Vice-President Patrick Oliva, “Innovation in mobility is at the heart of growth and urban well-being.”
Andy Eastlake took part in several workshops including one focusing on Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZ). This was highly topical from a UK perspective, with much international interest currently focused on proposals for London’s ULEZ which is seen to be at the leading edge in this area of policy.
TfL is currently consulting on an Ultra Low Emission Zone for London. While the capital's air quality has improved significantly in recent years and is now considered compliant for all but one air pollutant for which the EU has set legal limits. London is currently in breach of limits for nitrogen dioxide (NO2). An equivalent of 4,300 deaths in London is attributed to air quality related illness.
The ULEZ would require all vehicles driving in central London to meet new exhaust emission standards from 7 September 2020. A vehicle failing to meet the ULEZ standards could still be driven in central London but, under the proposals, a daily charge will have to be paid to do so.
