The LowCVP Low Carbon Champions Awards celebrate achievements in delivering innovation, new products, programmes and other initiatives which have helped to accelerate the shift to low carbon road transport. The LowCVP's third Champions Awards will be presented at a gala event to take place at One Birdcage Walk on January 29 2013 following a keynote address from Lord Deben (John Gummer), Chair of the Committee on Climate Change. Former 'Tomorrow's World' presenter Kate Bellingham will be the Awards MC.

Lord Deben the recently appointed Chair of the Committee on Climate Change will speak at the opening of the Awards presentations. As an MP, John Gummer was Secretary of State for the Environment during the 1990s and has been a prominent spokesperon on Climate Change issues for many years.

The Master of Ceremonies for the LowCVP Champions Awards will be Kate Bellingham. Kate is an engineer, TV and radio broadcaster - a former presenter of the BBC's 'Tomorrow's World'.

The Awards presentation will take place following a celebration event to mark the LowCVP’s tenth anniversary. The Anniversary Reception, to be attended by transport minister Norman Baker MP, will celebrate the achievements of the LowCVP’s first decade and provide an opportunity to announce the Partnership’s future strategy. The Anniversary Reception is sponsored by Michelin, BP Biofuels and BAE Systems.

The LowCVP Awards and Anniversary Reception are being held in association with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

The LowCVP Champions Awards celebrate examples of outstanding and innovative practice in accelerating the shift to lower carbon vehicles and fuels and reducing road transport emissions. There should be plenty of competition for the Awards this time as - over the last year and more - the automotive industry has been a bright sector in an otherwise dull economic picture while also delivering progress in environmental terms. Significant UK investment in low carbon vehicles and fuels infrastructure has been combined with more rapid reductions in new vehicle emissions and growing consumer and company interest in, and acceptance of, new low carbon technologies.

There are seven categories of Awards reflecting the diversity of those engaged in encouraging the shift to lower carbon vehicles and fuels. There are also two special awards. The awards are for:

• Low Carbon Car / Van Manufacturer of the Year
• Low Carbon Heavy Duty Vehicle Manufacturer of the Year
• Low Carbon Vehicle Operator of the Year
• Low Carbon Fuel Initiative of the Year
• 2012 Award for Low Carbon Innovation by an SME
• Low Carbon Road Transport Initiative of the Year
• 2012 Outstanding Low Carbon Publication or Report

The special awards are:

• Outstanding Individual in Promoting Lower Carbon Transport
• Outstanding Achievement in Low Carbon Transport over the last 10 years

The LowCVP Awards winners will be assessed by a panel of expert judges drawn from the LowCVP's wide range of stakeholder organisations including: BMW, BVRLA, Cenex, Department for Transport, Energy Saving Trust, Freight Transport Association, Green Car Guide.com, Greenpeace, Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV), NextGreenCar, Ricardo UK Ltd, Road Haulage Association, Shell, SMMT, Transport for London and others.

With so much innovation and dynamism around the low carbon transport sector this year - covering vehicles, fuels, policy and operations - I look forward to some very high quality entries.”
