LowCVP holds UK eBus Summit for eLIPTIC project

The Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership (LowCVP) hosted a national launch event for the Horizon 2020 project 'Electrifying Public Transport in Cities' (eLITPIC) in London on the 10th November. The UK eBus Summit brought together best practice examples of electric bus and supporting infrastructure deployment in the UK alongside an introduction to the variety of demonstration projects being undertaken across 12 European cities as part of the eLITPIC project.
The LowCVP, a public-private partnership tasked with accelerating the shift to low carbon transport in the UK, was the first organisation to host a dissemination workshop aimed at promoting the work of the eLIPTIC programme to a wider audience within the UK. One of the key aims of eLIPTIC is to maximise the learning outcomes of each electric bus use case by engaging with as many stakeholders as possible across Europe.
The UK eBus Summit was chaired by Mike Weston, Chair of LowCVP’s Bus Working Group and formerly Director of Buses at Transport for London (TfL). The first section of the day saw an introduction to eLIPTIC by Hendrik Kock, Bremen City Council, followed by presentations by TfL and PKT Gdynia on progress made to date in their respective projects.
LowCVP’s Managing Director Andy Eastlake introduced the development of low carbon bus policy in the UK and described how the Low Carbon Emission Bus market has grown since 2008. Mark Munday, Technical Director at First UK Bus helped LowCVP launch the second instalment of the Greener Journeys trilogy: ‘A Green Bus for Every Journey’. The new report details 20 case studies of different low carbon and low emission buses in operation across the UK from a bus operator’s perspective.
The first in the series ’The Journey of the Green Bus’ described the development of UK low carbon bus policy and the challenges currently facing the bus industry in the UK. Both publications can be downloaded from the LowCVP website for free.
The second part of the UK eBus Summit saw TfL’s Colin Gerald describe electric bus trials and deployment in London, which will have 78 electric buses in operation by the end of 2016. Derek McCreadie of York City Council provided an insight into the retrofitting of double deck sightseeing buses in York from diesel to electric powertrains. Steve Cornes, a champion of eBus deployment in Nottingham outlined the introduction of 13 BYD eBuses and fast charging infrastructure across the city.
BYD and Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) closed the day’s proceedings with a description of their collaboration with bus operator Go-Ahead London and TfL to convert London’s first dedicated electric bus depot in Waterloo. A site visit of the Waterloo depot and a look at the new BYD ADL-Enviro 200 eBuses took place in the afternoon.
