LowCVP Director appointed to board of new Renewable Fuels Agency

The Department for Transport has announced appointments to the board of the Renewable Fuels Agency. The Agency came into existence with the passing of the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) Order this month (October). The appointees will advise the Government on the establishment and strategic direction of the new Agency which has been set up to administer the RTFO. Greg Archer, the LowCVP Director, is amongst the appointees.

Jim Fitzpatrick, the transport minister, announced the establishment of the Office of the Renewable Fuels Agency (RFA) at the same time as laying the draft Renewable Transport Fuel Obligations Order 2007 in the House of Commons, together with its associated impact assessment and explanatory memorandum. The Order has passed through both Houses of Parliament.

The appointments to the RFA, which are part-time, also include Professor Ed Gallagher (chair) who was previously Chief Executive of the Environment Agency and National Rivers Authority and has been chair of Energywatch since 2004; Dr Paul Jefferiss, Director of Environmental Policy at BP, who was was previously head of Environmental Policy for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds; Gareth Llewellyn who is Global Director for Safety, Health, Environment and Corporate Responsibility for the National Grid; and Brian White, a former MP, who is co-founder and director of biofuel trading company, BionerG Ltd, and chair of the National Energy Foundation. Dr Jefferiss is also a board member of the LowCVP.

Under Greg Archer,  LowCVP has led the development of carbon and sustainability reporting as part of the RTFO and Greg has served on the inter-departmental Board overseeing its implementation.

Greg Archer said: “I am delighted to be able to accept this position and continue to contribute to the supply of sustainable biofuels in the UK. I will continue to present a balanced perspective of the merits and issues with biofuels and ensure the views of all stakeholders are heard in Board discussions.” He added: “I do not envisage any conflict of interest or demands with my other roles as LowCVP Director or as a member of the Cenex Board.”
