In an effort to cut fleet emissions, the Metropolitan Police Service has announced it will be trialling the Zero Dual Sport (DS) bike provided by manufacturer Zero Motorcycles in two areas of the force.
This is the first electric motorcycle to be used by the service and the Zero DS will initially be used in two areas of policing: The Motorcycle Tasking Team and its BikeSafe and ScooterSafe schemes.
The Motorcycle Tasking Team will use the bike at its roadside tasking sites, providing education to road users and enforcing correct road behaviour. As part of the BikeSafe and ScooterSafe programmes the Met will aim to raise awareness on safety issues providing briefings and assessments to help to reduce motorcycle related accidents.
Mick Cheeseman, sergeant in the Motorcycle Tasking Team, said the new bike will be tested using “everyday police conditions”. Managing director of Zero Motorcycles Europe Edwin Belonje told Business Green “The Zero DS will provide them with an insight into the huge benefits of electric vehicles, including noise reduction – particularly relevant in pedestrian areas – reduced running costs as there are minimal servicing and maintenance costs associated with electric vehicles, and obviously lower fuel costs.”
