Jaguar Land Rover is to invest an additional £150m in a new engine manufacturing centre, to open in 2013, which will be home to a new generation of lightweight, four-cylinder, low emission diesel and petrol engines.
Announced at the Geneva Motor show, the plant, near Wolverhampton, will employ 1,400 workers, with investment totalling £500 million. The first engines are expected to come off the production line in 2015.
Dr Ralf Speth, CEO, JLR, said: “Jaguar Land Rover's new engine manufacturing centre in the UK is a clear demonstration of our business strategy guiding our investment plans. Not only does it bring our engine supply back to our production doorstep, but it gives us significant new resource as we continue to innovate with new products and markets."
The facility is the first in the company's history to be entirely designed by Jaguar Land Rover. At more than one million square feet, the plant will include an engine testing centre alongside the manufacturing and assembly halls. The new family of engines is currently under development at Jaguar Land Rover's advanced research and development facility and aims to strengthen and expand the company's engine range supporting future product development plans.
The extension of the i54 plant business park on the Staffordshire-Wolverhampton border, follows the announcement in January (2013) that JLR is also planning to create 800 production jobs at its manufacturing facility in Solihull.
