Car maker Jaguar has announced it is to build 250 of the C-X75 hybrid electric supercar showcased last year at the Paris Motor Show in partnership with Formula 1 team Williams F1.
Carl-Peter Forster, head of Jaguar Land Rover owner Tata Motors, said the car was a “showcase of what the UK can do”. JLR claims the hybrid powertrain with plug-in capability will be able to reach 60 mph in three seconds, with a top speed of more than 200 mph whilst emitting less than 99g/km of CO2. The car will be powered with two electric motors combined with a petrol engine and will have an all-electric range of 30 miles (50km), according to Jaguar. The C-X75 will be priced from GBP700,000.
"In recent years, hybrid technology has been an area of acute development in Formula 1," said Williams F1 chairman Adam Parr. The BBC reports that the partnership between JLR and Williams F1 is part of the Formula 1 team's plan to extend the number of business areas from which it earns revenue. Williams will provide expertise in aerodynamics, carbon composite manufacture and hybrid technologies. Production of the new car is expected to create about 100 high-skill jobs in the UK.
Porsche, Volkswagen and BMW have also announced plans to build electric supercars.
