Iogen has made the first shipment of cellulosic ethanol to Shell as part of a commercial alliance with the energy giant to produce renewable fuel for use in Shell's fuel applications. Iogen has supplied 100,000 litres of an initial 180,000 litre order from Shell.

Cellulosic ethanol is made from agricultural residues such as cereal straw and corn cobs and stalks. The fuel being supplied to Shell is produced from wheat straw at Iogen’s Ottawa demonstration facility.

In July, Shell announced a large-scale investment in technology development with subsidiary company Iogen Energy Corporation, a jointly owned development company of Shell and Iogen which is focussed on the development of cellulosic ethanol. This boosted Shell's shareholding in Iogen Energy Corporation from 26.3% to 50%.

"The sale of this fuel reinforces the new commercial alliance between Shell and Iogen announced this summer. It is part of our focus on accelerating the deployment of next generation biofuels" said Jeff Passmore, Executive Vice President of Iogen.
