An international forum established to improve dialogue between the biggest producers and consumers of biofuels has been launched in New York. The forum is a joint project of Brazil, China, India, South Africa, the US and the European Commission.
The forum has initially been established for one year and will meet regularly to discuss ways to promote the sustainable use and production of biofuels around the world.
Antonia Patriota, Brazil's Ambassador to the US, explained at the launch event, held at the UN headquarters, that the forum would be a mechanism for closer coordination amongst major players and would seek to establish common standards and work towards the commoditization of biofuels, so that they might eventually be traded like oil. He said that the forum would bring in other players in the future.
