Industry report highlights progress in development of electric vehicle standards

The Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has published a new report that investigates the standardisation of Electric Vehicle charging connections and how the UK automotive industry could be involved future developments.
The report highlights international progress in developing standardised charging equipment, in Japan, the U.S. and Europe, examining a number of standardisation criteria, including the durability of charging equipment, environmental performance, electrical safety and impact assessment of the charge coupler.
In March this year, SMMT questioned its members, requesting information about the charging equipment for vehicles which were either currently on the market or due to be introduced over the next few of years. The twenty respondents covered a range of vehicles from light and heavy commercial vehicles to passenger cars.
Following the report’s publication, the UK will have the opportunity for greater input at a European level as the European Commission has requested the rapid development of standards relating to the charging of Electric Vehicles.
