At its first meeting in December, the Automotive Council agreed that its key objectives were to help make the UK a compelling investment proposition for the global automotive industry, promote the UK as a base for the development of low carbon vehicle technologies and to secure a strong UK supply chain.

The Council is co-chaired by business secretary Lord Mandelson and Professor Richard Parry-Jones CBE, former vice-president at Ford. The Council comprises of members of a cross section of senior automotive industry representatives (see associated link).

It is intended as a strategic partnership between industry and government and will oversee the development of a co-ordinated and strategic approach to the sector, with a Supply Chain Council and Technology Council leading specific areas of work.

After the first meeting, Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive and Council member said, “This first meeting signals a new and more collaborative approach, which will help sustain industrial capability and place the UK as a leader in the development and exploitation of low carbon vehicle technologies.”
